Transylvania Lectures: Where Do Rights Come From?
What is the true foundation of moral rights in human beings—and possibly in animals? Philosophers have long debated whether rights stem from consciousness, the ability to experience the world, or rationality, the capacity for reason and thought. At the next discussion in the Transylvania Lectures series, our guests will examine both perspectives and argue why rationality is the key criterion for moral rights. The conversation will also address complex questions, such as how individuals who lack full rational capacity fit within our moral framework and explore the broader concept of human essence in relation to morality and rights.
Our guest speaker will be Dr. Nick Zangwill, Honorary Research Fellow at University College London and Visiting Professor at Lincoln University. He has published three monographs, edited two collections, and published more than 150 articles on moral philosophy, aesthetics, epistemology, metaphysics, and other topics. In the UK, he has worked at the universities of Glasgow, Oxford, Durham, and Hull, with visiting positions in at the universities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Padua, Rome, Warsaw, the Institute of Fundamental Sciences in Tehran, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Haifa, and in the USA, Brown, Ohio State and Tulane. He is known for his expertise on moral philosophy, especially metaethics, and aesthetics, especially the philosophy of music and visual art. He has also written on metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of mind, and logic.
His partner in discussion will be Reverend Norbert Zsolt Rácz, a graduate of Hungarian Unitarian Church’s John Sigismund College and the Protestant Theological Institute in Kolozsvár/Cluj. His field of interest includes systematic theology, philosophical aspects of religiosity and questions related to the more theoretical side of existence.

Mi az erkölcsi jogok valódi alapja világunkban? A filozófusok régóta vitatják, hogy a jogok a tudatosságból, a világ megtapasztalásának képességéből, vagy a racionalitásból, az értelem és gondolkodás képességéből erednek-e. A Transylvania Lectures sorozat következő alkalmán vendégeink mindkét nézőpontot megvizsgálják, különös figyelmet fordítva a racionalitás fontosságára. A beszélgetés több összetett kérdést is érint, mint az emberi lényeg tágabb fogalma az erkölcs és a jogok vonatkozásában, illetve a racionális képességekkel nem rendelkező egyének erkölcsi keretrendszerünkbe való beilleszkedése.
Meghívott előadónk dr. Nick Zangwill, a University College London tiszteletbeli kutatója és a Lincoln Egyetem vendégprofesszora. Három monográfiát írt, két tanulmánykötetet szerkesztett, és több mint 150 cikket publikált erkölcsfilozófia, esztétika, ismeretelmélet, metafizika és más témákban. Az eseményen a beszélgetőtársa Rácz Norbert Zsolt unitárius lelkész. A Magyar Unitárius Egyház János Zsigmond Kollégiumában és a Kolozsvári Protestáns Teológiai Intézetben szerzett diplomát. Kutatási területe a rendszeres teológia, a vallásosság filozófiai aspektusai és a létezés elméleti kérdései.

Transylvania Lectures: De unde provin drepturile?
Care este adevărata fundație a drepturilor morale în lumea noastră? Filosofii au dezbătut îndelung dacă drepturile derivă din conștiință, capacitatea de a experimenta lumea, sau din raționalitate și abilitatea de a gândi. La următoarea discuție din seria Transylvania Lectures, invitații vor examina ambele perspective cu un accent special pe importanța raționalității. Discuția va aborda, de asemenea, întrebări complexe, cum ar fi noțiunea mai largă a esenței umane în raport cu moralitatea și drepturile, precum și integrarea indivizilor fără capacități raționale în cadrul nostru moral.
Speakerul invitat va fi Dr. Nick Zangwill, cercetător onorific la University College London și profesor invitat la Lincoln University. Interlocutorul său la eveniment va fi Norbert Zsolt Rácz, preot unitarian, absolvent al Colegiului János Zsigmond al Bisericii Unitariene Maghiare și al Institutului Teologic Protestant din Cluj-Napoca. Domeniul său de interes include teologia sistematică, aspectele filosofice ale religiozității și întrebările legate de latura teoretică a existenței.
