An ultimate God, being transcendent is beyond description in literal terms, as is asserted by many theologians. Our knowledge of the divine nature must therefore be indirect. A prime means of such an indirect approach is through the religious mythologies that have captivated humankind throughout recorded time and even earlier.  

Anthony O'Hear suggests that we must take these mythologies seriously, because each of them is potentially revelatory of some aspect of the divine. They all aim at truth and should be valued for this, but no single myth can reveal the whole truth. Each will be filtered through fallible human imagery and thought. So, while respecting and prioritising our own favoured myth, we should be open to illumination from myths originating in different times and cultures. 

At the next event of the Transyvania Lectures series, in his discussion, Anthony O'Hear focuses mainly, but not exclusively on the Christian myth, and draws on what C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien have said about this. He also considers on the way in which the Florentine neo-Platonists of the 15th century attempted to reconcile Christianity and the mythology of ancient Greece. His talk will draw on his recently published book 'The Prism of Truth: Reflections on Myth' (Cascade Books, Wipf and Stock, 2025). 

Anthony O'Hear is Professor of Philosophy at The University of Buckingham, UK. From 1994-2019 he was Director of the Royal Insititute of Philosophy (London) and Editor of its journal 'Philosophy'. Author of many books and articles on philosophy, he has advised several British governments on education. In 2018 he was awarded the OBE in the British New Years Honours List for services to education.  

Moderator: Noémi Osváth, a former student of Mathias Corvinus Collegium and a graduate in psychology. She has a strong personal and academic interest in exploring religious insights through both psychological and philosophical perspectives.

Transylvania Lectures: A transzcendens megragadása – A mítosz mint a vallási gondolkodás lenyomata

A teológusok szerint Isten transzcendens, nem írható le szavakkal, ezért csak közvetett tudásunk lehet az isteni természetről. E közvetett megközelítés főleg a vallási mítoszokon át valósul meg, amelyek az írott történelem kezdete óta, sőt még korábban is lenyűgözték az emberiséget. Anthony O'Hear szerint komolyan kell vennünk ezeket a mítoszokat, mivel mindegyik képes feltárni az isteni természet egy-egy aspektusát. 

A mítoszok az igazságot célozzák meg, ezért értékelnünk kell őket, ám egyetlen mítosz sem képes feltárni a teljes igazságot, hiszen az emberi képzelet és gondolkodás szűrőjén át torzulnak. Így, miközben saját választott mítoszainkat tiszteljük és előnyben részesítjük, nyitottnak kell lennünk más korokból és kultúrákból származó mítoszok tanulságaira is. 

A Transylvania Lectures következő alkalmán Anthony O'Hear főként a keresztény mítoszra összpontosít, érintve C.S. Lewis és J.R.R. Tolkien e témában kifejtett gondolatait. Megvizsgálja továbbá a 15. századi firenzei neoplatonisták próbálkozásait, ahogyan a kereszténységet az ókori görög mitológiával próbálták összeegyeztetni. A szakember kitér legutóbbi, The Prism of Truth: Reflections on Myth című könyvének tanulságaira is. 

Meghívottunk dr. Anthony O'Hear, a Buckingham Egyetem filozófiaprofesszora. 1994 és 2019 között a Királyi Filozófiai Intézet (London) igazgatója és a Philosophy című folyóirat szerkesztője volt. Számos filozófiai könyv és cikk szerzője, több brit kormányt is tanácsokkal látott el oktatási kérdésekben. 2018-ban a brit újévi elismerések alkalmából a Brit Birodalom Rendjének tisztje (OBE) kitüntetést kapott az oktatásért végzett szolgálataiért. 

A beszélgetés moderátora Osváth Noémi, a Mathias Corvinus Collegium volt diákja. Pszichológia szakon szerzett diplomát, érdeklődési köre a vallási nézetek vizsgálata pszichológiai és filozófiai szempontból.

Potrivit teologilor, Dumnezeu este transcendent și nu poate fi descris în cuvinte, astfel că natura divină ne este accesibilă doar printr-o cunoaștere indirectă. Această abordare indirectă se realizează în principal prin miturile religioase, care au captivat omenirea încă de la începuturile istoriei scrise și chiar mai devreme. 
 
Anthony O'Hear susține că trebuie să luăm aceste mituri în serios, deoarece fiecare este capabil să dezvăluie un aspect al naturii divine. Miturile urmăresc adevărul și, din acest motiv, trebuie să le apreciem, deși niciun mit nu poate dezvălui întregul adevăr, întrucât sunt filtrate prin imaginația și gândirea umană imperfectă. Așadar, respectând și prețuind propriile noastre mituri, ar trebui să rămânem deschiși și față de învățăturile miturilor provenite din alte epoci și culturi. 

La următoarea ediție a seriei Transylvania Lectures, în prelegerea sa, Anthony O'Hear se concentrează în principal pe mitul creștin, făcând referire și la ideile exprimate de C.S. Lewis și J.R.R. Tolkien pe această temă. De asemenea, analizează eforturile neoplatoniștilor florentini din secolul al XV-lea de a reconcilia creștinismul cu mitologia Greciei antice. Specialistul aduce în discuție și concluziile recentei sale cărți, The Prism of Truth: Reflections on Myth. 

Speakerul invitat va fi Dr. Anthony O'Hear, profesor de filosofie la Universitatea Buckingham. Între 1994 și 2019, a fost directorul Institutului Regal de Filosofie (Londra) și redactor al revistei Philosophy. Autor a numeroase cărți și articole de filosofie, a oferit consultanță mai multor guverne britanice în domeniul educației. În 2018, a fost decorat cu titlul de Ofițer al Ordinului Imperiului Britanic (OBE) pentru serviciile sale aduse educației, în cadrul Distincțiilor de Anul Nou.
